Royal Visitor to Riverhill

The High Street is flying Union Jacks from all the flag poles above the shops because we have a very special visitor to Cobham. We are delighted to announce that HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO will be visiting Cobham on Wednesday 9th July 2014 to open the Riverhill Regeneration Project, our contribution to the 2012 Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Her Royal Highness will meet those involved in the project, as well as members of the Trust and will view the work carried out. The Countess of Wessex will unveil an information board explaining the project and will then move on to the new platform overlooking the River Mole to view a mini race of 20 plastic ducks (every September 8,000 plastic ducks race down this stretch of river as part of Cobham’s Heritage day celebrations).

Her Royal Highness will then move to the Tilt, visiting Cobham Mill (Surrey’s sole surviving Water Mill) en route. At the Tilt The Countess of Wessex will view the avenue of cherry trees planted by the Cobham Afternoon WI in 1946 in memory of Cobham residents who lost their lives in the Second World War, after which Her Royal Highness will view the memorial constructed recently by the Cobham Conservation & Heritage Trust. The Cobham Band will be playing and there will be a demonstration of Maypole dancing by children from St Matthews School, Downside. There will be a small tea party for invited guests of the Trust, which has been provided by Waitrose Ltd and Cobham Evening WI.

The unveiling of the information board can be viewed from the High Street side of Riverhill. The Duck Race can be viewed from the grassed bank to the east (left) of the platform. Members of the public should be in position by 2.15pm latest.

To view the celebrations on the Tilt, the public should arrive by 2.45pm.

There is no car parking available at either site but there is a public car park at Hollyhedge Road Cobham and an overflow car park on the Leg O’Mutton Field opposite the Hollyhedge Car Park. This overflow car park will be opened at 1.30pm and closed at 5.30pm on 9th July.

This is a very special event for Cobham and for the Cobham Heritage Trust and we believe it is the first Royal visit to the Community of Cobham in living Memory. So we hope you will do your utmost to come out and support us either at Riverhill or the Tilt. Even the weather looks set fine!
