The 2nd Hampshires landed at Salerno in Italy on 9th September, 1943 with 128th (Hampshire) Brigade, which secured the beachhead and advanced several miles inland. Enemy counter-attacks began on the 13th and continued until the Germans withdrew on the 20th, as Allied forces approached from the south. Died of wounds. |
