| Additional Information: | Son of Ernest and Emily Kirkby, of Cobham, Surrey. Joined the Royal Navy at 15. One of four former pupils from Leatherhead Central School killed on board the battleship H.M.S. Royal Oak, at anchor in Scapa Flow. Launched in 1914, the ship had seen action at the Battle of Jutland. It was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-47 with the loss of 835 of the 1, 234 crew. |
